The 2012 edition of this event is being hosted in Castrop-Rauxel (GER). One interesting statistic was that the IKF had half of the first day's games refereed by a female referee and in one match both of the officials were ladies, probably the first time this has happened in an IKF event.
There were no particular surprises in the games on this first day. On paper the teams from Hungary (MAFC) and Poland (AZS Balluff Wroclaw) were expected to be the two weakest teams in the event and this was borne out as the hosts Schweringer KC (GER) beat the Hungarians comfortably 15 – 5, whilst Nottingham (ENG) was far too strong for the Polish team winning 21 – 7.

The day 1 matches in the 46th IKF Europa Cup were decisive. The winners reach a top 8 ranking. The losers will be contesting the places 9 to 12.

The first match between Assessoria Valparadis (CAT) and SKK Dolphins Prievidza (SVK) showed great commitment. The whole match the Slovakians gave a lot of defensive pressure to their opponents, but the Catalonians were always on the right side of the score. They finished with a 19-15 victory.
In the next match NC Benfica (POR) did what was expected, they beat FJEP Bonson (FRA) by 36-6 after 20-2 half time. The Portugese team outperformed the French squad due to a much higher scoring ability.
First time participant Ankara University Club (TUR) showed a lot of enthusiasm and energy in their match against Trojans (ENG). But the more experienced English team stayed calm and created the opportunities to win 19-10.
The day ended with the match between the hosting club Megasports Warsawa (POL) and Orel State University HSS (RUS). It was a match with 2 different tactical concepts, Orel State University HSS focused on the long distance shot and Megasports Warsawa more playing from and in the post area. The Russians achieved a well-deserved win; 18-27 after a 7-12 score at halftime.
