On June 3 two IKF instructors, Theo van der Linde and Peter van Vliet, left Malawi after completing the delivery of numerous courses, with a strong emphasis on building capability within local PE teachers. The visit provides valuable impetus in encouraging the Malawi Korfball Federation (MKF) to work alongside other African korfball countries in preparation for their first foray into the international arena.
Already during the Zimbabwe leg of the instructors' african safari have successfully implemented together with the the local instructors Vanessa Muchayi and Tarirai Chadebah (President of the Zimbabwe Korfball Federation) initiatives in the Mashonaland Central Province with generous support received from the Swan Fund. Theo van der Linde and Peter van Vliet then went on to hold clinics in Mutare and Maswingo and presented gifts donated by Dutch korfball clubs, the gifts included starting korfball kits, balls and korfs. Teachers from dozens of schools actively participated in these courses.
As a result of this initial work the MKF is intent on the implementation of clinics for teachers in all 10 provincies of the country. A vital cog in sustaining this activity is the nurturing of strong linkages between the targeted schools and local community sports clubs. As a next step in the developmental phase, the MKA will work towards the formation of an U23 national selection which will compete on the international stage with their korfball neighbours - South Africa and Zimbabwe.
