The Executive Committee of the International Korfball Federation has awarded the IKF Pin of Merit to Karel Stessens. Stessens, from Belgium, has been on the international referee list almost continuously since 1987. Stessens was a referee in the 1999 World Championship in Australia. After ceasing his career as an international referee in 2001, he joined the Referees Committee of the IKF and the Referees Committee of the Belgian Korfball Association KBKB.
