In 1998 the Brazilian Marcelo Soares, at that time a physical education student, had his first contact with korfball. Intrigued with the fact of it being obligatory to play with both men and women, and after a lot of research, he had the idea of bringing the game to his country. In spite of many difficulties in trying to implant Korfball into Brazil, the game was little-by- little getting to be known and winning followers, so much so that today six teams exist in Rio.
