The Guinness World Record's Attempt of korfball, organized in Hungary on 30-31th December, 2001 ended with a 340-340 draw after 24 hours of fierce korfball playing. The two teams, each of 53 players, played 24 hours without any interruption in the longest match of the history of korfball. In the beginning the yellow team was leading by 5-8 goals, and after 3 hours, the difference was already 10. Then the gray team realized that it was time to answer the challenge, and they started to climb back: after 4,5 hours the score was equal again, and the gray team kept on with the high pace. Just before half time the difference between the two sides was already 43 goals, with the gray team in the lead! The yellow team didn't give up, but started a long come back. They won the next 45 minutes by 18 goals, and by noon (18 hours after the game had started), the score was again equal. And, like their opponent earlier, they didn't stop, but kept on scoring, so just 90 minutes before the end, they were again leading by 7 goals. And when everybody thought that the match was over, the gray team surprised their opponents with a last sweep of 8 goals, so just 45 seconds before the end they were leading again! But then Henk Jongstra equalized in the last second, and that's how the final score became 340-340. All 106 players' and the 9 referees` performance was excellent, but there were some who were even better.
The female top scorer became Barbara Skrionya (HUN) with 26 goals, while on the male side, Viktor Horvath (HUN) finished with 48 goals. Out of the 9 foreign players (6 Germans and 3 Dutch), Mira-Alexandra Luzens (GER) scored the most on the female side, with 9 goals, and Henk Jongstra (NED) on the men`s side, with 19 goals. The Chief Patron of the event was the Embassy of the Netherlands in Budapest, and the Main Sponsor was software company HumanSoft.
The IKF supported the event by donating 7 orange-black balls, which were later offered for charity, or forwarded to the sponsors as a special present. The Hungarian Railways offered nice prizes for the lottery, while HD Electronic gave nice books for the top scorers. Hungary's leading commercial radio channel Slager Radio publicized the event by broadcasting a report with the organizers, and the event was also broadcast on the web by the leading Hungarian websites mno.hu, origo.hu, zoldsport.hu. The organizers will now put together all the required documentation, and then will wait anxiously for the response of the Guinness World Record's office.
