President in Croatia to witness activities of youngest IKF member
Friday, 27 February 2009 18:05

IKF President Jan Fransoo today visited Zagreb and Karlovac in Croatia to witness the huge potential of korfball in this Balkan country. He met, amongst others, with the President of the Croatian Olympic Committee.

The Croatian Korfball Federation HKS joined the IKF in October 2008. The Federation is headed by President Mislav Bjasic and is full of activities, energy and ideas to further develop korfball in this country with a rich tradition and excellent performance in other team sports, notably football, handball, and waterpolo. The HKS currently counts 11 member clubs, 7 of which are based in the capital of Zagreb. The Zagreb clubs are also united in a regional federation (Zagreb Korfball Federation), while further regional federations are currently being set up in other regions of Croatia.

President Fransoo and President Bajsic visited the Mayoral Office of the City of Zagreb and the Zagreb Sports Federation to ascertain the full recognition of the Zagreb Korfball Federation by the relevant authorities in the city, and discussed the availability of playing grounds to further develop the sport. The clubs are eager to expand their activities but limited space to play in the city causes problems. Discussions at the mayoral office were promising, as the Zagreb Sports Federation expected that full membership will be granted to the Zagreb Korfball Federation, and also the city is going to find a permanent basis to play the Zagreb korfball competition.

At the National Olympic Committee, there was a meeting with the Croatian Olympic Committee HOO President and Secretary General. The membership application of the HKS was discussed, and it is expected that within the next few months, they will be accepted as a member of the HOO. Also, discussions were held with representatives of the Ministry of Education regarding the programming of korfball in schools.

Finally, on a visit to Kralovac, support was obtained from the mayor of one of the leading sports cities in the country to further develop korfball in Kralovac, beyond the current two clubs. Kralovac, unlike Zagreb, has a high number of excellent sports facilities.

The future of korfball in Croatia looks very bright with a crisp and visionary team lead by President Bjasic, and the IKF has high expectations of their first international appearance later this year at the European Bowl.
