The 2012 edition of this event is being hosted in Castrop-Rauxel (GER). One interesting statistic was that the IKF had half of the first day's games refereed by a female referee and in one match both of the officials were ladies, probably the first time this has happened in an IKF event.
There were no particular surprises in the games on this first day. On paper the teams from Hungary (MAFC) and Poland (AZS Balluff Wroclaw) were expected to be the two weakest teams in the event and this was borne out as the hosts Schweringer KC (GER) beat the Hungarians comfortably 15 – 5, whilst Nottingham (ENG) was far too strong for the Polish team winning 21 – 7.

The other two matches, however, were more in line with what normally happens at this event – close. A combination of strong defence and some inaccurate shooting kept the scores somewhat lower than expected in one game but two late goals in the first half saw SG Pegasus (GER) go in at half time four goals to the good (6 – 2) against CCCD Carnaxide (POR). However, the second half finished all square with two late goals from Henning Eberhardt (who scored half of his team's goals - six) killing off a Portuguese fight back, leaving the final result 12 – 8 in favour of Pegasus. The other match, between Ceske Budejovice (CZE) and CE Vilavova (CAT), saw the Czechs come back in the last 14 minutes from three goals behind to lead by four, the seven unanswered goals coming in just 10 minutes. The Catalans fought back in the final three minutes but the Czechs just held on to win by one goal, 16 – 15.
