In the morning round of matches SG Pegasus (GER) took control of their match against CE Vilanova (CAT) with a burst of seven unanswered goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and went on to win 13 – 8. In Pool B the other German team, hosts Schweriner, killed off what had been a tight game against the Polish team from Wroclaw with five goals without reply in the last eight minutes to win 16 – 9. The following match saw Ceske Budejovice, who led 7 – 4 at half time, almost throw away a seven goal advantage in the last nine minutes of their match again CCCD Carnaxide (POR) but just held on to win 14 – 13. In the final match of the morning session MAFC (HUN) belied their ‘on paper’ ranking and gave Nottingham (ENG) a fright. Nottingham’s shooting was very poor and the Hungarians capitalised on this to lead, in the lowest scoring first half of the event, by 3 – 2 at half time (the first goal in the match not coming until the 8th minute). Eventually, after a couple of substitutions Nottingham scored just enough to see out the game, winning 9 -6.
Both pools enter the afternoon session in a situation where the two unbeaten teams in each pool meet each other to determine the rankings.
