Previously unbeaten SG Pegasus (GER) and Ceske Budejovice (CZE) met to determine who would win Pool A in the first of the afternoon’s matches. The Czechs were unable to reproduce what they had done in their previous two matches – string together several unanswered goals – so were not really a match for the Germans who won 15 – 8.
In the other pool hosts Schweriner faced Nottingham (ENG). The defences were very strong, none more so than Nottingham who only allowed Schweriner to score four goals, two in each half) and half of these were penalties. The English team won 13 – 4 and will now face the Czechs from Ceske Budejovice in tomorrow’s semi-final. The other semi-final will be an all German affair with the hosts playing SG Pegasus.

The other matches were between MAFC (HUN) and AZS Wroclaw (POL) and the Iberian contest between CCCD Carnaxide (POR) and CE Vilanova (CAT). The Eastern European match was very close and also one of fluctuating fortunes. The lead changed hands five times in the match but it was the Hungarians that were ahead at the end by turning a two goal deficit into a three goal win in the final five minutes (13 – 10). The other match also swung one way and then the other with the lead changing 5 times in the first half and was crowned with three goals in the last 35 seconds. The Portuguese led 10 – 9 at the break but within two minutes of the start of the second half the Catalans got their noses in front and gradually stretched their lead to win 17 – 12.
So tomorrow, CE Vilanova will play MAFC for 5th place and CCCD Carnaxide will play AZS Wroclaw for 7th place.
